Ayurveda is a truly holistic practice. It seeks to know and understand the individual and the root causes of their symptoms. In order for the practice of Ayurveda to be holistic, it is the practitioner’s job to intimately connect to the person in front of them and assess how to best return him/her back to their true state of health. We all need to be supported on this road of recovery. It is not Nature’s intent for us to be unhealthy, it is a sign of imbalance. We, in our natural state, should experience soundness in body and mind. From such a place of harmony, our own innate joy, wonder and enthusiasm will return. An Ayurvedic consultation will help one to learn how to return to a state of balance and harmony.
The Ayurvedic Consultation includes an introduction to Ayurveda and how to use it on a practical day to day basis. All aspects of the person are addressed (spiritual, mental, emotional and physical). Details of the person’s life are taken into consideration, including stress, work, family, relationships, daily habits and availability of support systems. A thorough history will be taken in order to identify one’s personal constitution as well as to identify any imbalances that are currently present. If any imbalances are detected, recommendations will be made to lead one back to a state of natural health. Consultations also include individual food recommendations and recommendations on lifestyle, routine, exercise, water, herbal therapy, abhyanga, and yoga.
In Ayurveda, FOOD is MEDICINE. This means what you eat will either enhance your health or damage it. The “one diet fits all” that is so popular today denies that we are individuals and need to be treated as such. The majority of popular diets also avoid the principle of digestive fire. Without a stable digestive capacity any diet becomes toxic because we can not digest it. Thus, an Ayurvedic consultation will explain what foods to eat and at what time to eat them according to your individual constitution. Also, specific guidelines will be given on how to care for your digestive fire (Agni) in a way that promotes digestive ability. When our digestive fire is stable, our capacity to digest, transform, and absorb our food is greatly enhanced. This leads to a restoration of our own body’s innate ability to eliminate toxic substances that is often impaired if ones digestive capacity is weak. Benefits of an increased Agni include a reduction in weight, bloating, digestive discomfort, constipation and a number of other common digestive complaints. We also begin to experience a lightness and clarity in body and mind when our digestive systems are no longer burdened with toxic waste materials.
The initial consultation creates a structured routine for the client to start their journey to healing. The follow up consultations establish a deeper understanding of the nutritional theory and practice of Ayurveda as well as providing continued support. Changes are made slowly and gradually, and always in accordance with the individual’s life and circumstances.
